Shouldice Hospital is a healthcare facility in downtown Toronto, Canada that specializes in the repair of external abdominal hernias. The hospital was founded right after World War II by Dr. Earle Shouldice, who had developed a surgical technique that contributed to a patients early ambulation following surgery. Key factors of the Shouldice method were the use of a local anesthetic, the design of a facility to encourage movement and eliminate discomfort, as well as, the postoperative regimen designed and communicated by the medical team.
The effectiveness of the Shouldice method was quickly recognized by patients and doctors all over the world. This, in conjunction, with the hospitals rates that were at least 50% lower compared to competition, explains why Shouldice needed to undergo several expansions throughout time to cover up the continuously increasing demand for surgeries.
