In the last several years, researchers and physicians have offered three main theoretical perspectives on drug use. These perspectives are biological, sociological, and psychological. Each perspective offers and interesting and intriguing view on chemical dependency and addiction. Biological theories focus on genetic factors, physiological factors, and neurochemical systems in the brain. Psychological theories focus on the psychoanalytic theories, behavioral theories, and nonpsychoanalytic personality theories. Sociological theories direct on the anomie/strain theories, social control/bonding theory, differential association theory, and the labeling theory.
Genetic factors have been argued to be a cause for drug abuse. Many studies have been conducted to support this theory with both humans and mice.
