Lord of the Flies
In the novel Lord of the Flies, the author William Golding depicts hunting as the evil inside everyone. In the beginning of the story, Jack finds himself unable to kill the pig because his civilized instinct is dominating his savage instinct. After the first successful hunt, the hunters experience the savage thrill and pleasure of killing. Now, the desire for killing is greater. By the end of the book the savagery has gone so far that the boys hunt humans, not just pigs. Through the motif of the hunt, Golding reveals how savagery slowly takes complete control over most kids on the island.
Jacks Civilized instinct makes him unable to stab the pig when he first has the chance to hunt. The boys are out exploring the island when they spot a pig. The pig gets caught in a curtain of creepers and jack approaches it with his knife. " He raised his arm in the air. There came a pause, a hiatus, the pig continued to scream and the creepers to jerk, and the blade continued to flash at the end of a bony arm. The pause was only long enough for them to understand......
