One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a novel written by Ken Kesey which discusses the life inside a psychiatric ward over the autocratic control of a former Army nurse, Nurse Ratched, with the prospective of a half-Indian patient, Chief Bromden, who is also the narrator of the novel. The quiet, peaceful and routine life of the ward is suddenly disturbed by the appearance of Randall Patrick McMurphy, a war veteran condemned in a work-farm which has avoided by pretending to be a mentally ill. The narrator extols McMurphy in his description because he is a completely different person than the Chief and the rest of the patients are and he cannot tolerate the inhuman and autocratic environment that the Big Nurse has created. Although McMurphy only tries to make the life and the environment inside the psychiatric ward more bearable, Bromden compares him with a saviour and a messiah and later on describes him as a martyr who sacrificed himself to save the rest of the patients from the, ironically called Angel of Mercy, Nurse Ratched.
