Early American Literature and History Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The study of American literature should be important to everyone because it describes the foundation of America. These stories tell of the beginning of America, and how the country was founded. John Smith gives his account of the hardships he and the colonists faced in Jamestown in his work, A General History. Of Plymouth Plantation was written not long after by William Bradford, and tells of the Mayflower and the start of the Plymouth colony. Mary Rowlandson tells of her capture by the Indians in “A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson.” These stories show true patriotism and loyalty to America and everyone should learn from them. A General History written by John Smith was written in an apologetic form as a “defense of Smith’s actions and a vindication of his beliefs” (St. John, pg 17). The story tells of how hard it was when the Indians captured him and his encounter with Pocahontas was also briefly mentioned.
