In The Pearl by John Steinbeck, social standing drove Kino to the point of murder. His quest for a ‘better life’ pushed him to lose the things he was trying so hard to protect and care for. A lack of educational opportunities helped reinforce the social barriers Kino wanted to overcome. Kino believed that if he could afford to give Coyotito an education, Coyotito would move up in social status and he and Juana’s lives would have improved also. “And my son will make numbers and these things will make us free because he will know-he will know and through him we will know,” (Steinbeck 26). The simple lifestyle of their lower social status maintained Kino’s sense of powerlessness against the doctor. Because of his stature Kino could not question the doctor’s procedures or his motives. “ Kino felt the rage and hate melting towards fear. He did not know, and perhaps this doctor did. And he could not take the chance of pitting his certain ignorance against this man’s possible knowledge,” (Steinbeck 30).
