Lay Gill Nets Effect in Hawaii Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Lay gill net is a fishing tool first introduced to Hawaii by the Japanese in the 1950s and should be banned from using it in Hawaii by irresponsible fishermen. Hawaii has some of the most beautiful fish in the world, but even though Hawaii has the quality of fish, it lacks quantity. The main reason for the fish deficit is most likely from fishermen in Hawaii taking as much fish as they can with the use of gill nets. This decline of fish isn't something that happened recently, it started about 50 years ago, which is around the same time lay gill nets were introduced. Although these fishermen don't target every species of fish in Hawaiian waters, when they do target their main prey (Moi, Ulua, and Kumu) they also capture by-catch when using lay gill nets. In a section of Potter E.C.E., and M.G. Pawson's book, Gill Netting, they talk about the problem of over fishing with the use of lay gill nets. Potter and Pawson state when a “…new and effective method of fishing increases the exploitation rate on certain stocks (of fish)…” (Potter 29). This is possibly one of ......
