A lithosere is a succession that begins on a bare, consolidated rock surface. An example is the rock exposed at the coast, where there are eustatic and isostatic changes, rocks exposed as glaciers retreat or volcanic lava after an eruption. It is an example of primary succession; a succession that begins on a non-vegetated landscape.
On the Isle of Arran, this has happened due to the gradual exposure of a rocky shore platform during a period of relative sea level fall, mainly due to isostatic readjustment after the end of the last glacial period, about 9000 years ago. The raised beach exposed is 15m above the current sea level.
The environmental conditions were initially saline and the beach was exposed to Southerly and Westerly winds. There is no soil, only bare rock and South facing so receives a high level of insolation; with bare rock surface temperatures reaching 30ºC in the summer, but below freezing in the winter.
