Each weekday morning over 102 million Americans hop into their cars and begin their lone commute to work. Oblivious to the enormous amounts of pollution their cars emit, they leave early only to sit in traffic jams. These emissions, as well as that of industrial waste, are putting a huge strain on the global climate. As these gases are released into the atmosphere, they absorb the heat that is radiated by the sun. This excess of heat being trapped in the Earths atmosphere is called the greenhouse effect. Over time, as more and more heat has built up, a noticeable increase in the Earths average temperature has occurred. This temperature increase is referred to as global warming. Although we have not yet seen the long-term effects of global warming, recent trends suggest severe consequences.
One of such consequences is the increasing rate in which the polar ice caps are melting. Since 1979, the summer polar ice caps surrounding the North Pole have diminished by nearly 20%. If the Earths ice continues to melt at this rate, by the end of this century, the ocean level will ......
