Conceptions of Identity in the Feature Film Independence Day Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

What do you get when you put a black hero, aliens, women, nuclear bombs and of course, the Americans, into a feature film? You get a typical Armageddon Hollywood film, and in this case, it’s ‘Independence Day’, directed by Roland Emmerich. The film presents the scenario where aliens invade the Earth and kill anyone who attempts to stop them, with the world rallying and launching a counterattack on the aliens. The film presents many stereotyped representations of race and national identity through numerous film conventions. One representation of the Americans presented in the film is their national identity. The stereotype of America being the world leaders is constantly displayed in ‘Independence Day’, with the first sign occurring in the first few minutes of the film. The first shot starts with a bright, close up shot of the moon, then moves to the footsteps left by the astronauts, the landing module, the American flag, and a plaque left on the moon by the Americans. It read “We come in peace for all mankind”, suggesting that Americans are the unquestionable representativ......
