Marriage as Prison Marriage and Character in “The Story of an Hour” and “A Sorrowful Woman” Although portrayed differently, marriage is perceived as a constraint to the protagonists in “The Story of an Hour” and “A Sorrowful Woman.” Not only is this shown through the events of the story, but also through the way in which each protagonist becomes a dynamic character. In Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour,” the unnamed protagonist goes from feeling abandoned at her husband’s death to feeling a new freedom. It is somewhat the opposite in Gail Godwin’s short story “A Sorrowful Woman.” The wife and protagonist, who also goes unnamed, suddenly becomes overwhelmed with guilt at her sudden contempt for her roles as mother and wife. In “The Story of an Hour,” the protagonist is introduced as Mrs. Mallard, which emphasizes her role as a wife and not an individual. This gives an idea to the reader the time in which the story takes place, which is important because of the societal standards women were held to; their main role was that as wife and their purpose was......
