As time and generations passed, the instruments, music, and technology evolved greatly. In 1877, Thomas Edison invented the first device that could record as well as reproduce copies of a musical performance: the cylinder phonograph. This mechanical device recorded only the sounds that it heard, and the recordings could not be edited or modified. With even greater advances in technology, modern electronic devices allow editing and modification of music in just about every aspect. Along with this technological evolution came a specific process in which the music was recorded. Although the modern musical recording process uses many complex electronics systems, and may seem complicated, it can be broken down into three simple steps.
