Euthanasia - Absolving Conscience? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Although euthanasia is a touchy and highly debated topic which has seen no end, Rachels and Callahan have produced articles to illustrate two opposite positions on morality as a function in distinguishing between active and passive euthanasia. The following conveys Rachels argument regarding his belief that there is no moral distinction between the two; then pits Callahan’s position in rebuttal; continuing to evaluate both arguments though a debate based on the two ideas they have presented and finally concluding whether the method of death is ultimately of importance, which Callahan presumes, or not, as Rachel contends. Rachel argues that there is no moral difference between killing (active euthanasia) and letting die (passive euthanasia); individuals believe there is an important distinction since they assume that it is morally worse to kill, than to simply let one die. He illustrates two cases, of Jones and Smith, that are the exact same except for one respect- one allows an individual to die, the other involves killing.
