Courtly love is practically non existent in today’s society but in shakespears time it was still in plays being sung about and wrote about and I will discuss how Shakespeare presented it in Romeo & Juliet and how Romeo shows himself as a courtly lover. The idea of ‘true’ love was probably more alien to them than that of of courtly love and arranged marriage whereas nowadays modern audiences find the concept of courtly love and arranged marriage controversial. Courtly love was born into society in the middle ages and is a prospect where a man loves a woman who doesn’t love him back. She must be beautiful; she must be unavailable meaning he cannot have her. In those days to marry someone she must have the approval of the farther because in those times the daughter didn’t have a choice as marriage was usually a ploy to gain power or royalty into the family. Different classes had different opinions about courtly love. The upper class thought a lot of the idea of courtly love as it tended to benefit them a lot it was very existent in there society.
