Poets: Artists or Just Writers? Samuel Taylor Coleridge said “Poetry: the best words in the best order.” Seamus Heaney, a Nobel Prize winning author, tells stories through his explicit works of poetry. The poem “Digging” explores the relationship linking a potato farmer digging and a poet writing. While the poem “Blackberry-Picking” is about the connection between blackberries turning from sweet deliciousness to rotting mold and the joys and disappointments of summer. Another work, “Mid-Term Break” discusses the death of a young boy through his older brother’s eyes. Through his poetry, Seamus Heaney draws the reader into his world by adding his own biographical details, expertly crafting the literary elements, and allowing the reader to make story connections. In the poem “Digging”’ Heaney makes biographical connections between being a poet who digs with a pen to being a laborer who digs with a shovel.
