The Rules of the Game The short story, “Rules of the Game” by Amy Tan tells the story of a young Chinese-American girl growing up in a poor section of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Her life changes when she convinces her older brother to teach her to play the game of chess. He was given the used game with some pieces missing from the missionary ladies at the First Chinese Baptist Church. Her two older brother taught themselves how to play by reading the old instruction book and were reluctant to let their little sister join in until she offered up her Life Savers candy for the missing pieces; the winner gets to eat them. As time passes Waverly, the young girl, begins to consistently beat her brothers at the game and they soon lose interest. One day she spots some old men playing chess in the park and convinces one of them to play with her. This is the beginning of her great journey. There are three character archetypes in this story. The hero is the young girl who experiences a journey from innocence and childhood to experience and a certain level of maturity. The wise old man......
