Spies written by Michael Frayn - Relationship between Keith and Stephen Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
I am writing an essay on the adventure novel Spies written by Michael Frayn and I am investigating the relationship between Keith and Stephen in the first five chapters.
A large aspect of Stephen and Keith relationships seem to be based on class issues. We get the feeling throughout the first five chapters that Stephen feels subordinate to Keith because of his families status in The Close. Evidence that Stephens family are below Keiths in the classes is that Stephens family is one of the two families that live in a semi-detached house on The Close, showing that they cannot afford a detached house. Stephen says the ways of the Haywood family were no more open to question or comprehension than those of the Holy family, showing that he thinks very highly of Keiths family, looking up to them and almost idolising them. This is even shown in which schools Keith and Stephen go to, Were socially colour coded for ease of reference.
