As the children were making their way through the crowds to see Jesus, the disciples rebuked them as petty distractions. They saw the children as an interruption to Jesus demanding schedule concerning the constant crowds. Jesus responded indignantly to the disciples reproach, seeing the children as a model for human virtues like innocence, trust, and humility. More importantly, however, Jesus goes on to say these qualities are vessels for entering the kingdom of heaven, knowing that as a man grows into an adult, they become tarnished by experiencing the comprehension of the depths of the human soul.
