The spears now lay broken, and the Mexicans beside them. They were broken by strangers from an unfamiliar world. Strangers who the Mexicas believed were gods. Hundreds of years have passed since the conquest of Mexico. In The Broken Spears the account of the conquest is given voice by the indigenous people of Mexico for the first time. These original accounts by native Aztec writers build upon the accounts of their Spanish victors.
The strangers first appeared on the Gulf coasts. News spread of these strangers and Motecuhzoma ordered that there be a watch kept along their shores. Upon news of their arrival Motecuhzoma felt it was their god, Quetzalcoatl. Motecuhzoma sent his messengers to receive these strangers with gifts worthy of gods. Upon their arrival the messengers kissed the ground beneath Cortess feet, treating him as a god. They displayed the gifts of gold and other finery, and dressed Cortes in the wardrobe of a god.
