According to Freudian theory, little boys fear castration when they discover that little girls do not have penises. The little boys assume that the little girls must have lost their penis at some point, and that the boys do not want to suffer the same fate. Little girls want to have a penis. Because of their extreme penis envy, they grow very attached to their fathers. Their father have penises, so the little girls reason that if they cannot have a penis of their own they can supplement this lacking by becoming closely connected with someone’s penis. Women assume submissive and often times degrading roles to appease the owner of the penis. Freud’s theories are very appeasing to men. The idea that women want nothing more than to be close to their penis is exciting and empowering. The phallic has become a symbol of power and control. Men want to maintain the control.
