Macbeths Fear of Fear Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Macbeth is one of the William Shakespeare’s shortest plays, but it finely portrays a human drama of ambition, desire, and guilt. The protagonist, Macbeth, is seen to be a contradictory character who has fear of fear itself. This can be seen through his soliloquy, his conversations as well as his reaction in many scenes. Shakespeare uses a range of figurative language and other language features to vividly and dramatically reveal Macbeth’s fear of fear. The audience is first invited into Macbeth’s mind during his soliloquy in Act 1, Scene 3, lines 125 – 141. The soliloquy occurs after the witches’ prophesies and Macbeth portrays a deeply disturbed mind, indicating his ambition and desire for power and outlining his fear of fear. Macbeth’s repeated use of ‘if’ and ‘why’ shows double characteristics of ambition and fear in Macbeth. ‘Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair/And make my seated heart knock at my ribs/Against the use of nature?...’ (lines 134-135), the use of this personification gives the heart the human quality of knocking.
