Taiwan under International law Introduction Taiwan is a unique case for the study of international relations and for the consideration of foreign policy in the world. Taiwan meets all of the traditional criteria for statehood as found under international law and is one of the most developed nations of the world populated by a people who largely identify themselves as a distinct nation. The controversy regarding the political status of Taiwan hinges on whether Taiwan should remain the territory of the Republic of China, become reunified with the territories now governed by the People's Republic of China, or become the Republic of Taiwan. The notion that Taiwan is a part of China is taken as a matter of faith among China’s government and most of its citizens. It is also similarly taken as a matter of faith among the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), which formerly ruled the island and still retains a strong presence in local Taiwanese politics.
