The new millennium has not been kind to the United States of America. Politics have gotten more and more corrupted, the conflict in Iraq has no end in sight, and there is a looming possibility of more war with nations such as Iran and Syria. However, there have been two events in the past seven years which have shaped Americas policy more dramatically, the September 11th terrorist attacks and the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. No two events in history have tried the political system as much as these have shown. These events are the focus of David Kettls book, System under Stress. Kettl examines the response to both of these disasters and tries to give rationale and suggestions for what could have been done better and what needs to be done in the future. Kettl brings about an explanation that the two events are stress tests for the government and help explain whether the government is healthy to address such concerns or not.
