Transportations Impact on Early American Business Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

At the end of the Eightieth century, overland transportation was so difficult in America that businessmen looked toward the oceans for trading opportunities. As late as 1816, shippers could bring a ton of goods three thousand miles from Europe by sea for about $9, but the same amount would move a ton of goods inland by wagon only thirty miles. George Washington was among the American leaders who recognized that overcoming the barriers to inland transportation was a necessity for the commercial growth of the domestic American market. Therefore, Washington and other entrepreneurs, often in alliance with government officials, set out to lower transportation costs through what they called internal improvements. The construction of improved roads was one of the first internal improvements Americans made in the early nineteenth century. Most of the nationÂ’s original roads were nearly impassable: severely rutted, axle-deep in mud during rainy weather, and usually single-lane.
