1. Why do you think this tragedy occurred? What were the main factors that help to explain it?
There were several factors that the team had to consider during the entire exercise of reaching the summit of the worlds tallest mountain. We have attempted to classify the various factors below:
a. Organizational factors:
There were two distinct teams that planned to reach the summit at about the same time. Although there were designated leaders in each team, and designated co-leaders and henchmen, the team wasnt really a unit, it was in fact a collection of individuals who never really established strong relationships in the forming stages, for example Boukreev and Krauker pointed out that they werent really comfortable with their fellow clients. The team was a mix of experienced climbers and inexperienced adventure seekers, so they were not all necessarily trained or equipped with succeeding at this task; many were just ordinary people with no mountain climbing experience at all, such as Dr. Weathers, and two journalists.
