Loren John History 122 Professor Bill Burak Our nation's greatest pastime is baseball. The American League of Baseball has fourteen teams. One of these teams being the New York Yankees. How did they become a popular team of baseball? The New York Yankees came into existence in 1913. Going back in time to 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery bought the failing baseball team of the Baltimore franchise in 1903 for a mere $18,000.00 and moved the team to Manhattan. In March of the same year, the team was accepted into the American League of Baseball. The team was named "The Highlanders" because their newly built, all wood playing field was built on one of the highest spots in Manhattan. The first game the Highlanders played was at the Washington home field and was won by Washington. The soon to be New York Yankees very first win and second game was against Washington at Washington's home field. The Highlanders very first home game was played at Hilltop Park in Manhattan in 1903.
