Dracunculus medinensis, or the guinea worm, infects approximately 10 million people per year. The Guinea worm is found in predominantly in East and West Africa, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. The guinea worm has been blamed for the majority of school absences in many parts of Africa, wasting valuable time and resources in already-poor third world countries. It inhabits freshwater lakes and rivers where people go for drinking water. This nematode was known as a parasite of humans about 1530 B.C. Some investigators suggest that the Guinea worm is the "fiery serpent" that is referred to in the Bible. The symbol of a physician is the "Caduceus". This is the staff of Hermes and contains coiled serpents on a staff. The serpents are believed to represent the Guinea worm. When the adult female migrates to superficial cutaneous tissues some symptoms become evident due to the release of toxic substances.
