Creating Dominant and Alternative Readings of Female Characters in Hamlet Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The way texts are constructed generally determines how a text may be read and understood. The main reading is one that represents the beliefs and values which are most powerful in a culture, whereas alternative readings are available because they challenge the beliefs and values of the dominant culture. Hamlet, a revenge tragedy written by William Shakespeare, can be read to have a number of readings. Hamlet was written around 1602, in England during the Elizabethan period. This period saw women being regarded as the ‘weaker sex’ not just in physical, but also emotional strength. Women were expected to be passive, innocent, virginal and chaste. Ophelia and Gertrude, two female characters in Hamlet, are constructed so that there can be different readings of them – conforming to the ideal Elizabethan female, or conflicting it. In Hamlet, it is possible to construct both dominant and alternative readings of Ophelia and Gertrude. The most dominant reading of Gertrude is one that fits the ideal Elizabethan women.
