With the election of the anti-slavery Republican candidate for President, Abraham Lincoln, the Southern states decided they had to take drastic action in order to protect their own interests. On December 20, 1860, a secession convention met in South Carolina and adopted an Ordinance of Secession from the Union. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas quickly followed suit. This was a very drastic and stunning event for the country. The North and the South were two separate and very different cultures; this was the cause of the Civil War. When Lincoln was elected the South felt they had no choice but to succeed, they felt that Lincoln’s first decision as president would be to abolish slavery. Without slavery the south felt they could not survive. The incident that began the Civil War involved the demand for the surrender of Fort Sumter, in Charleston, South Carolina.
