Antigone Passage Analysis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The play Antigone by Sophocles is about a young woman, Antigone, who is trying to bury her dead brother Polynices and gets sentenced to death. A prominent theme in the passage is the law of the gods against the law of man. Sophocles uses a range of metaphors to depict Haemon’s determination in trying to persuade his father to let Antigone go. The passage is very dramatic and includes a wide use of tonality skill, rhetorical statements, diction, and repetition. With these literary devices, Sophocles writes about a clash between a father and a son, highlighting the law of the gods against the law of man. The choice of words and tone of language create suspense, but also intensifies the emotions within the passage. In line 78, Haemon is trying to offering his father advice. His respectful tone of ‘Father’ shows the seriousness and the sincerity of Haemon’s words. In line 80, Haemon’s ‘I cannot say..’ show the hesitation Haemon possesses at his knowledge of defying his father. His harsher words in line 82, “that you have reasoned badly” are both emotive and persuasive for Cr......
