SELF IMAGE The importance of image in American society has become drastically obsessive. The way a person looks has become an obsession, and unhappiness about the way a person looks causes them to have low self-esteem and even despair. Media has helped achieve a level of need for women today to start concentrating too much on their overall appearance. Why are we so worried about our representation to others? Why do we try to follow the views of society about what or who is considered beautiful? Are we striving for something that doesn't exist but in our own fantasies? According to the National Eating Disorders Association studies, 80 percent of women say they are dissatisfied with their bodies. Similarly, 80 percent of ten-year-old children are afraid of being fat. A shocking 42 percent of first to third graders want to be thinner.
