The story of Jane Eyre is, in many respects based upon the author Charlotte Brontës own experiences. Charlotte Brontë was born in 1816 in Yorkshire, her father being a Church of England clergyman and her mother coming from a prominent Cornish Methodist family. Brontës character, Jane Eyre, is an advocate for women at a time when womens independence was not valued, particularly by the Church. Charlotte Brontë was aware of the difficulties that women faced, wanting to make their own way in the world, in Victorian society. She herself had worked as a teacher and a governess but wanted to make a career out of writing. The story of Jane Eyre expresses a young girls longing for fulfilment in life, something Brontë wanted herself. The novel is full of dramatic contrasts, the ordinary and everyday life being set against the gothic with almost supernatural detail. The writing is forceful and vivid, creating an impression of anguish felt by the protagonist. Brontë wrote not only about what she saw but also the hidden and unseen.
