Fort Sumnter Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Fort Sumter was the location of the opening of the Civil War (Hesseltine). This military fortress is located in Charleston, South Carolina (Hesseltine). Fort Sumter sits on an artificial island and it is one of four military fortresses in the Charleston harbor (Yoesloff 22). The fort sits at the end of the Ashley River and the Cooper River (Yoesloff 21). The construction of Fort Sumter began in 1829 ( Swanberg 7). The construction continued from 1829 to the year 1839 and at that point in time there was over a half a million dollars put forth to build the military fort (Swanberg 7). Even though there had been ten years of work and a lot of money spent the fort was still unfinished (Swanberg 7). This military fort was able to hold a total of 650 men (Yoesloff 22). The military fort was also able to have about 140 weapons (Yoesloff 22). Major Robert Anderson was in complete control of all three of the forts in the harbor of Charleston (Hesseltine).
