In the article entitled Ethnic and Sex Differences in Suicide Rates Relative to Major Depression in the United States, published in American Journal of Psychology in October 2001, authors Dr. Maria Oquendo, Steven Ellis, Steven Greenwald, Kevin Malone, Myrna Weissman, and John Mann discuss the discrepancies between racial and sex groups in the United States in relation to depression and suicide rates. The authors then go on to investigate possible social factors for these disparities, citing reasons such as biology, adaptability, and limitations in reporting symptoms. In order to do so, the authors initially prove that suicide most often (60%) occurs in conjunction with the presence of a mood disorder such as depression; they then go on to illustrate that among five ethnic groups in the U.S.- white Non-Hispanics, African-Americans, Mexican- Americans, Cuban Americans, and Puerto Ricans- there are major differences in the prevalence of suicide rates relative to the groups overall depression rates.
