Presbyterianism is not a religion per se. It a denomination of Christianity. Being Christians we share all the major tenants of the Christian faith, Jesus Christ being the Messiah promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who would "bless the world" whose sacrifice on the cross atones for our sins and gives us eternal life. They share the belief that the scriptures are the Word of God our standard for faith and practice. The differences between Presbyterians and other denominations of Christianity are in our form of government and in our understanding of the sacraments. The word "Presbyterian" comes from the Greek word for elder. They believe that the leadership in the church comes from elders elected by the people. There are ruling elders who organize the church and see that it is faithful to Christ and teaching elders or pastors who teach and preach the Word of God. They believe that the New Testament teaches that Jesus Christ instituted and participated in two sacraments.
