In “American Dreamer,” Bharati Mukherjee gives insight to her readers about her own personal life experiences with racism, multi-culturism, her struggles with identity, and her desire to come to “America”. For Mukherjee, America is “the stage for the drama of self-transformation” (52). She first came to America in 1961 to attend a Writer’s Workshop at the University of Iowa, where she was to study creative writing for two years and then return to Calcutta and marry the bridegroom her father would select for her. Unexpectedly, she would not only disobey him, but she would disappoint him as well, in taking control of her life. Mukherjee shares her account of personal struggles with her own identity, which she had a clear sense of before immigrating. In India, the concept of not knowing your identity is unimaginable. Hindu identity, according to Mukerjee, “is a fixed one, derived from religion, caste, patrimony, and mother tongue” (53).
