“The Great Gatsby” was written by a man named F. Scott Fitzgerald. The book is set in the 1920’s, in a time when alcohol was made illegal in the United States, also known as the prohibition. My why question that I am asking about this book is why is the use of alcohol so prominent throughout this book? There are many ways in which alcohol played a toll in this book. First of all, the use of it is present through out a good portion of the book because of the main character Jay Gatsby’s parties that he has every weekend for his friends, and some people he has not even met before. Gatsby is a bootlegger, and much of his time is dedicated to his work, this is evident in several passages, where conversations are cut short by mysterious phone calls: “Philadelphia wants you on the phone sir” (chapter3). All of his possessions such as his house and his car (which play such an important and symbolic role in the plot) are impregnated with the provenance of his money. The fact that he is a bootlegger is an important factor that makes his dream of being with and marrying Daisy impossible......
