In The Women of Brewster Place, each of the seven women had hopes and dreams, but most of the women did not have the means to fulfill their dreams. Etta Mae Johnson, for instance, was always on the quest for love, approval and a steady cash flow. Etta Mae searched high and low, from state to state, from one man to another to find what she was looking for. Brewster place is where her search ended. “No one cries when a street dies….It dies when the odors of hope, despair, lust, and caring are wiped out by the seasonal winds; when dust has settled into the cracks and scars, leveling their depths and discolorations—their reasons for being; when the spirit is trapped and fading in someone’s memory.” (191) For Etta Mae Johnson was Brewster place the street where her dreams were deferred and “dried up like a raisin in the sun” or was Brewster place where Etta dreams exploded and then reincarnated: an “ebony phoenix” consumed by fire and from those ashes born again. Both Etta Mae Johnson and her friend Mattie Michael came from the same small southern town of Rock Vale......
