This paper seeks to critique the efficacy of the Person Centred approach to therapy, examining its inherent strengths and weaknesses, as well as explore methodologies that might enhance effective bonds with clients based on this orientation.
Background on Person Centre Therapy
The Person Centered Therapy (henceforth referred to as PCT) is based on humanistic psychological concepts, as articulated by Carl Rogers in the 1940s. Rogerss basic assumptions are that people are essentially trustworthy, that they have a vast potential for understanding themselves and resolving their own problems without direct intervention on the therapists part (Corey, 2005). As such the focus of PCT is to have a more personal relationship with the client, encouraging him towards self-directed growth and self-actualisation.
The three key conditions of PCT that therapists need to employ are: Congruence, Unconditional Positive Regard, and Empathy.
