Behaviors of Society In the short story “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” written by the Latin author Gabriel Garcia Marquez uses magical realism to show a mixture of reality and fantasy as one. From the beginning an unexpected visitor falls down from the sky giving the villagers an expression of fear and confusion. The townspeople couldn’t agree whether the old man with enormous wings was an angel or a circus freak. Through magical realism, Marquez demonstrates the types of behavior shown by the townspeople in the story from cruelty, ignorance, and lack of faith through their actions. Cruelty was shaped from the beginning of the story. When Pelayo, a character who found the angel in the rear of the courtyard was “frightened by the nightmare”(217) and looked at the angel with fear and surprise. After pelayo’s presence, he took the old man with enormous wings “and before going to bed he dragged him out of the mud and locked him up with the hens in the wire chicken coop”(218).
