Colour Purple Comparison Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

There were many changes that were made from the novel “The Color Purple” to Spielberg’s film adaptation of the story. These omissions and additions in the film end up removing important character elements and the overall development of the protagonist, Celie. In changing Celie’s relationship with God, her connection with her children through her sister Nettie’s letters from Africa and the nature of her intimate friendship with Shug Avery, Spielberg alters the severity of Celie’s life experiences and de-emphasizes her character turnaround. Celie has a stronger connection with God in the novel than in the film. This is important not only to our understanding of her as a reader, but also to the development of her character overall. Celie’s faith is what gets her through the enormous trauma that she has endured. In order to deal with her painful experiences in the novel, Celie writes numerous letters to God, which account for more than half of the novel.
