There is no doubt that the contributions made by American women to the efforts of World War II were substantial, both to the success of their country and to their own social and working status within their country even after the war was over. The establishment of the Womens Army Corps in 1942 incorporated women into the US Army while keeping them away from direct combat. Most commonly they served as nurses in the American Army and Navy Nurse Corps but many were actively recruited to take on support positions in the army as skilled lab technicians, cartographers, and radio operators. They were also called upon to work in factories to compensate for the labor discrepancy created when men left to fight overseas; 2.3 million women worked in the war industries in the U.S. building ships, aircrafts, vehicles, and weaponry. Despite the great sacrifices and contributions that women made to the wartime effort, there would remain a national paternalistic attitude towards womens service in the war.
