Battle of Gettysburg Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
During the days between July 1st through July 4th of 1863 was what some consider the turning point of the war. This battle was called the Battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg is a town in southern Pennsylvania.
This battle actually happened by accident. The Confederate Army was moving north towards Pennsylvania while the Union Army was shadowing them and staying along side of them, but remaining out of site. Then on June 30, 1863 the points of the two armies met and opened fire and more than 2,000 men were killed. Word got back to the Robert E. Lee of the Confederacy and to Meade of the Union. The two Generals dug in and planned for battle. Meade knowing the land took the 3 hills each about a mile apart from each other and gained the high side of the battlefield. Lee not knowing the land of Pennsylvania scrambled into the forest about a mile away from Meade (Smolinski 22).
