The current juvenile justice system seems to be no longer suitable for today's hardened youth gang members. Demographics indicate the ever increasing problem of youth gang crime is not going away. In fact, it will only get worse. The seriousness of this problem can not be left undercover. If direct attention is not given to youth gang crime, it will only lead to the decay of the community. Action must be taken to control the activities of youth gangs in a different direction.
According to the Office of Juvenile Justice Program (2000), juvenile crime with guns has gone up, with the tripling of Juvenile homicide. Since the 1980s through the early 1990s, homicides have tripled involving youth gangs with a handgun. If a survey were to be taken, asking a police Chief in any major cities in this society about the youth crime in their community, the answer would be youth violence and how the handguns are more powerful and are used more frequently. Not to mention the death of youth by guns used by gang rivals, which guns kill more youths than all diseases combined.
