Antigone Conscience vs. Law Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Antigone Antigone could be a play about an insubordinate young woman, sister rivalry, death and burial, or about devotion with respect to many different things. Or on the other hand, it can also have untold significance such as Individual versus State; Conscience versus Law; Moral or Divine Law versus Human Law. To consider which gives us the most evidence, and explains why it most effectively portrays the play, we have to figure out what holds the deeper meaning. In the play Antigone, the most primitive question asked by Sophocles is, “which law is greater: God’s or man’s.” God’s judgment of man plays a key role in the battle between human and the divine law. Sophocles must have asked this in order to save Athens from Moral destruction, which is relatively eminent in the play. The three conflicts, Individual versus State; Conscience versus Law; Moral or Divine Law versus Human Law are very strongly correlated.
