The Fight for True Freedom
Even though the war had officially ended and the former slaves were considered to be freedmen, there were many laws, codes, and economic as well as political prejudices that were in affect to put extreme limits on how free a freedman really was. Henry Adams, an emancipated slave from Louisiana explained to his former master after the war in 1865, If I cannot do like a white man, I am not free(Foner, p.551). This was the case around the entire South in the years that followed the Civil War. There were hundreds of thousands of former slaves whose population outnumbered the whites almost 2:1 but they had no money and more importantly no place to go (Gisolfi, 9/6/07). Consequently they still had to rely on the former slave owners and other white southerners to survive. General Sherman, a Union officer, played an enormous role in granting former slaves land and getting their lives back on track.
