A Peoples History of the United States by Howard Zinn balances the scale of writing about the parts of US history thats not often covered in depth. It often focuses on the effects of government policies dealing with the poor, women, and non-whites throughout US history; it also covers state labor movements and equality movements more in depth than one normally sees. This book also points out the mixed and disappointing records of US heroes. It is an attack on assumptions about the heroes and important events in history, in the stories we tell ourselves as a culture. Many people are left without description and simply are taken for granted as part of the shared knowledge with the reader, while Howard Zinn dives into details relevant to his intent. This book is clearly not balanced in itself, but is suppose to balance a well known thought of history. As I said in the beginning of the book it is very balanced as you read but he tends to go on tangents and the book talks about dark and gloomy places, then he just throws in history incidents.
