Great changes have taken place in the lives of women since the Victorian Era. This much
difference now related psychologically, politically and professionally. However, in The Story of an Hour
Kate Chopin suggests that wives were imprisoned in the Victorian Era. Their social conditions were
appalling. Difficulties escalated for women because of the perceived ideal women. Louise Mallard, our
protagonist, realized that she had been oppressed and limited in her marital rights.
It is evident that Louise, an apparently young lady, had been psychologically oppressed in the
marriage. The law required womens right similar to the rights of children. As she ponders a life without
him, she finds that when Brentley was alive his powerful will ben[t] hers persistently(773). A child
needs to be directed by an adult, they are unable to make appropriate choices when exercising their
will. Yet, if an adult, like Louise must persistently have her will bent depriving her the opportunity of
