Margaret Laurence Biography
Margaret Laurence was born Jean Margaret Wemyss on July 18, 1926 in Manitoba, Canada. The Stone Angel was published two years after her separation from her husband in 1962. It is the first of five books that have been popularly known as the Manawaka series which create a realistic picture of the small Canadian town in the prairies from the late nineteenth century to the 1960s. Laurence bases the fictional town of Manawaka in which much of the story takes place on her own childhood and youth (King 64).
Following her graduation from Winnipegs United College, Laurence married John Fergus Laurence whose job took them to the Gold Coast, a former British protectorate. In 1962, Laurence left the Coast for England and frequent visits to Canada, separating her husband to become an independent writer in residence at the University of Toronto.
