Waste Land - T.S Elliot Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

As an initial observation, T.S Eliot’s, ‘The Waste Land’ (1) is an utmost moving, modernist piece of poetry. I observe that Eliot attempts to explore the demise of a civilisation, and the notion that it is insurmountable to recover the true semantics of life. In its ambiguity and obscurity, Eliot cleverly balances ridicule and foresight amongst brusque and terse changes in the narrative, along with integrating an anomalous spectrum of cultures. The poem initially received a divided reception amongst critics. Edmund Wilson’s critical piece, ‘The Poetry Of Drought,’ (2) argues that Eliot’s poem has an ‘effective, cohesive structure that emphasises autobiographical and emotional elements.’(2) As well as critically being in favour of ‘The Waste Land’ Wilson’s perspective on life has clearly been affected by the words of Eliot, in that he correlates his ideas and notions with those of his, ‘Not only is life sterile and futile, but men have tasted its sterility and futility a thousand times before.’(2) This critical surmise can be likened to Eliot’s opening in the poem, ......
